Marvel and Sony will bring back their fan-favorite hero with the sequel to the hit animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. But can the sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse live up to the same standard that the first movie managed to achieve?
The first Spider-Verse movie was one of the most loved Spider-Man projects we have seen from Marvel and Sony so far. Despite not being in live-action, it received massive praise from Marvel fans and critics. It was especially touted for the revolutionary animation style they used to capture the incredible beginning of Miles Morales’ story.
And that story will now continue, as he delves back into the Spider-Verse with a whole host of new intriguing characters and the potential for new worlds and storylines to be introduced. However, with the amount of love for the original Spider-Verse film, it will be an enormous challenge to capture the same magic in the sequel.
What is Across the Spider-Verse about?
Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will reunite and team up with Gwen Stacy once again for this upcoming movie. Across the Spider-Verse is also expected to introduce a greater villainous threat that will push Miles Morales to develop into his best form yet.
We also learned a few plot details from some of the recent trailers for the upcoming Spider-Verse movie,such as seeing a massive amount of new Spider-People characters all gathered together and alternate worlds for us to learn all about.
Another core element expected to feature in Across the Spider-Verse will be the major focus on family, like we saw in the first movie. Writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will likely tackle how his family is managing after his powers and invisibility have now been revealed and it could give us a greater glimpse at the pressure that mounts on the young hero from those who depend on him.
Will Spider-Verse 2 be better than the first?
From the soundtrack to the animation, it is difficult to fault the first Spider-Verse installment for much of anything. The effort that went into it sets the bar extremely high for Spider Verse 2. And, this upcoming release will have to do a lot to outshine the original.
It is a lot to ask that this new Across the Spider-Verse movie will be better than the first. But, even if it delivers a similar product to what we got in 2018, it will still be a roaring success in theaters. However, they have now established many of the characters, so there won’t be as much time needed for worldbuilding and it could be a lot more action packed than the first.
For now, we’ll just have to wait and see how they stack up against one another after it is finally released and viewers have time to digest the two. Thankfully the release date for Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse is not that far away anymore.
Across the Spider-Verse release date
Many movies in production lately have been called to a halt or massively delayed following the WGA strike, but that should have little to no effect on Spider-Man as the movie would’ve been in the final post-production stages when that writers’ strike was first announced.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will now officially release in theaters on June 2, 2023. While it was originally scheduled for April 8, 2022 and even had an October 2022 date for a brief while, it was one of many projects pushed back due to the global pandemic.
There is also expected to be a third movie released on March 29, 2024 called Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which will act as a second part, or a close follow up, from the events in the 2023 release Across the Spider Verse. As for now, little is known about the third movie, but we won’t have much longer to find out what kind of trouble Miles Morales finds himself in this time.
