Amazon Games have announced they are working on creating a brand new MMO title with plenty of storylines and characters based on the original ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit franchise. But how far away is this game and what can players expect in terms of a release date?
As of now, Amazon Games has yet to officially name their upcoming Lord of the Rings title, but they have revealed who they are working with on the project, what type of game it will be, and what storylines and lore it will be loosely based on.
The new Lord of the Rings Open-World game is one that many will eagerly await. Thankfully, it will be arriving globally for players on consoles and on PC, meaning that everyone who wants to will be able to experience it when it releases.

In terms of a release date, no official timeline has been confirmed yet by Amazon Games. However, they have revealed that the Lord of the Rings MMO is in the “early stages of production, with Amazon Games Orange County,” so it is still very early in the process.
With most AAA developers, MMO games usually take anywhere between 4-8 years to make, depending on the scale of the world they choose to build. Amazon Games have confirmed that they have a “clear ambition to create the highest-quality entertainment products for this IP,” meaning that we can probably expect it to take a bit longer.
Judging from the industry standards alone, you might expect this new title to arrive in 2027-2029 at the earliest. But, as delays on major titles are becoming more commonplace, particularly with events like the WGA’s writer strike affecting the production of media, it is safer to assume that the new Lord of the Rings MMO will have a release date around 2030.
What is The Lord of Rings MMO about?
So, what exactly will The Lord of the Rings MMO offer for fans of the franchise? In the latest announcement, Amazon Games revealed that the Middle-earth world we have come to know through TV series and movies will be quite similar in-game.
“The upcoming game will be an open-world MMO adventure in a persistent world set in Middle-earth,” Amazon Games shared in their blog post, revealing that it will draw from “the beloved stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy.”
The Lord of the Rings franchise and lore is fairly expansive so there are a lot of different ways that they could take it. Could it be similar to the popular Lord of the Rings Online MMORPG? For now, there is still much to speculate about and we will just have to wait for information to be revealed.
