How Secret Invasion Will Shape Marvel Phase 5’s Future

The new Secret Invasion TV show could have a major impact on the next releases in Marvel’s Phase 5 and 6. Here’s a look at what the new series will include and how it could set up intriguing new character storylines.

Secret Invasion will be the next major TV series to release on the Disney Plus platform. With mixed reviews in their latest batch of movie releases and Disney laying off Victorio Alonso, Isaac Perlmutter, and 7000 employees in Disney’s entertainment division, there’s a lot of pressure on Marvel to return to its former glory.

The next release slated for the MCU will be the closing chapter of the Guardians of the Galaxy in Vol 3, that story will likely be focused on events surrounding the Planet Knowhere, as well as each of the Guardians’ origin stories. While it might briefly touch on what’s been happening on Earth, we will have to wait until Secret Invasion to get a full look at what’s been happening on our home planet.

What will Secret Invasion be about?

Based on a comic book with the same name, Secret Invasion will focus on the Skrull occupation of Earth-616, with the alien race quietly replacing and shape-shifting into some of the biggest political leaders, right under the nose of Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D and S.W.O.R.D.

This TV show highlighting the Skrull takeover will feature Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), as they navigate one of their most difficult challenges yet. With few they can rely on, this premise will set up quite an interesting dynamic in this spy/thriller narrative series.

Secret Invasion will also introduce some new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The addition of actors like Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Dermot Mulroney, and Kingsley Ben-Adir has already been teased by Marvel, and each is expected to have significant roles in the upcoming release.

How will it affect Marvel’s future phases?

Earth-616 is in an unusual period right now in the MCU, following the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. With the threat of Kang looming, Secret Invasion will highlight the current state of the planet’s superheroes, and how the Earth will be politically, both before and after the Skrull invasion.

Depending on how they choose to resolve this Secret Invasion, some of the planet’s major players could either be removed or replaced for upcoming projects. While it is unclear if any of these consequences will have a direct impact on shows like Ironheart, Echo, or Loki Season 2, Marvel has been known to connect major events between shows in the past.

We could also see the MCU finally tie their storyline in with the popular Agents of Shield series, which focused on S.H.I.E.L.D’s battles with the Kree and Skrull races. Since the project was announced, many have called for Chloe Bennett to make a return to her character, Daisy Johnson, or “Quake” and aid in Nick Fury’s fight to counter the invasion.

The possibility of connecting these shows would also open the door for other characters outside the MCU like Ghost Rider to appear in future Marvel movies and TV shows. The idea of these crossovers could lead to some interesting storylines in the future of Phases 5 and 6.

By the time Loki Season 2 and The Marvels movie roll around, there will hopefully be a renewed energy and excitement for Marvel’s superheroes and the overall MCU storyline. But until Secret Invasion releases on June 21, we can only speculate how well it will be received.
