Sam Obisanya has been one of the strongest characters written in the hit Apple TV show, Ted Lasso. But with the series coming to its expected end with the Season 3 finale, could a spinoff show focused on Sam’s journey after A.F.C. Richmond be compelling to fans of Ted Lasso?
While it is hard to delve into every single one of the players’ origin stories and struggles in Ted Lasso, Sam Obisanya is one of the few Richmond players written to be an incredibly layered and complex character. From his struggles back home to his fling with Rebecca and battles over political issues, Sam has been pivotal in many of the series’ biggest moments.
With Ted Lasso’s journey coming to a close with the season 3 finale, could we see the story continue with one of the cast members? The character with some of the most overall potential and unresolved issues that could be worthy of a spinoff is Sam Obisanya. So, let’s break down what makes his character one of the best candidates.
Does Sam Obisanya have the most potential in Ted Lasso?
Unlike some of A.F.C Richmond’s biggest stars, in the Season 3 storyline, Sam has yet to have that standout moment on the pitch that helps him catapult into being a world-class talent, and receiving the same treatment that Roy Kent, Jamie Tartt, and even Zava during his brief tenure, all had from the fans, staff, and analysts.
As he is one of the younger players on the side this makes perfect sense, but it also sets him up as the Richmond player with the most accolades left to achieve. Throughout the series, he has always been looked at as the second or third-best player on the squad and he has a lot of potential to grow into a great leader moving forward
As we saw during the “International Break” episode, there is also the fact that he was one of the few truly talented Premier League players that hasn’t played for his own country and that there are still many dramatic storylines surrounding his character that have yet to be resolved.
Edwin Akufo’s plan and Sam’s political goals
Ever since Sam first took a stand against DubaiAir and their environmental effect, he quickly became the moral compass of the team, often standing up to make statements at the detriment of his own playing career. Because of this, we have seen the many ways it has come back to bite him, primarily because of the tech billionaire, Edwin Akufo, and his spite for the young Nigerian.
Most recently we have seen Akufo attempt to create a Super League with the best global football clubs for his own greed, but he has made many moves that skirted the lines of morality throughout the series. As mentioned, he even admitted to bribing high-ranking government officials affiliated with the Nigerian Football team to stop Sam from making the starting roster.
This isn’t the only attack Sam Obisanya has been on the end of, however, as we saw Ola’s, the restaurant named after his father, vandalized after his statement against Ted Lasso’s fictional British home secretary, Brinda Barot, on the issues of refugees crossing into the country.
There are many possibilities and plenty of storylines they could follow, but Sam’s character has been the focal point for much of the world-building that has happened in Ted Lasso. It would only make sense that if a spinoff show was to be considered for the series, he should be heavily involved, if not the main focus of the show. As of now, there has yet to be any mention of future episodes or a spinoff in the works but more information may be revealed after the release of the Season 3 finale.
